Gypsum is a hydrous calcium sulphate, when well crystallised producing excellent transparent monoclinic crystals, which are often twinned in swallow-tail forms. Such crystals of gypsum are called selenite, for the crystals tend to show moon-like iridescence from the cleavage surfaces.
